Mark.8.12 He sighed deeply and said, "Why does this generation ask for a miraculous sign? I tell you the truth, no sign will be given to it." (NIV)
Have you heard or said anything like "God show me a sign that you are..." And surprisingly statements like this are coming from the lips of believers too.
The Pharisees were asking Jesus for a sign from heaven to prove what he was saying. And it grieved Jesus Christ because signs were not meant to go before the word. They are supposed to follow the word.
One needs to first believe then the signs will follow to confirm the word. The generation Jesus Christ was dealing with did not even want to believe in Him but to just criticize. Their hearts were not seeking for a sign to help them believe but to prove their thoughts towards Him.
Mark.16.17-18 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover." (NKJV)
As a child of God, signs should not be what draws you to God. Infact they should not cause you to start seeking one for yourself because at the end, instead of seeking for God, you will seek signs.
1Corinthians.14.22 Thus [unknown] tongues are meant for a [supernatural] sign, not for believers but for unbelievers [on the point of believing], while prophecy (inspired preaching and teaching, interpreting the divine will and purpose) is not for unbelievers [on the point of believing] but for believers. (AMP)
The signs people keep seeking for are actually designed to follow them as a confirmation of the word of God in them. What is meant for believers is prophecy which is the inspired preaching and teaching, interpreting the divine will and purpose.
Instead of asking God to show you a sign of His presence, seek to understand His will and purposes. Prophesy is not limited to prophets. Every child of God can prophesy. Because it's the ability to know what is in the mind of God.
Stop waiting for dreams and visions or some strange voice, or a sign to be shown to you and start understanding the will purposes of God through His word and trusting in Him.
