"From childhood," he answered. "It has often thrown him into fire or water to kill him. But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us." "'If you can'?" said Jesus. "Everything is possible for him who believes."(Mark.9.22 -23 NIV)
From childhood as the father of this child has said, I believe many physicians and healers were sought to redeem the soul of this boy. No wonder even the disciples had tried to extend a hand of help, but all failed.
So when this man says "But if you can do anything, take pity on us and help us," I believe you understand the reason why. In your life there might be something that looks like a dry bone, with no hope of life. It has stayed soo long that you are trying to learn to live with it. Or you have started to ignore and called it the will of God. Perhaps you are planning to give up on trying.
You have tried all you thought you could but nothing is working out. Until this man met the Christ Himself, his heart had calcified and put it that nothing else can be done.
To Christ, there was only one thing this man missed all the days of his son's life. Faith. Infact when Jesus came, He found him arguing with the disciples. It seemed this man was telling Jesus to also take his chances in saying "if you can."
God does not take chances. Thinking that God takes chances is a sign of unbelief. Sometimes people present their problems to God asking Him if He can help them. But God is saying, "Everything is possible if you believe." God is able to do anything.
But when you ask him, be sure that you really expect him to answer, for a doubtful mind is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. People like that should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. (James.1.6-7 NLT)

In the same scenario, when the disciples asked why they couldn't send out the evil spirit, Jesus told them it required prayer and fasting. So, why the prayer and fasting? Prayer and fasting aligns us to the frequency of God. It helps us build our faith and see things from the perspective of God. Prayer carries us to the place where we trust entirely on God not our strength.
Now you can see that it also needed the disciples to believe that they are more superior than the evil spirit.
"Anything is possible if you believe." The thing that seems not working, it could be that you are seeing it from the realm of impossibility. The world under the spell of the devil has taught you to accept that it is impossible but I say, "see it from God's perspective."
I want to remind you that anything is possible for he that believes. Take the step of faith not just a step of probability.
