So kill (deaden, deprive of power) the evil desire lurking in your members [those animal impulses and all that is earthly in you that is employed in sin]: sexual vice, impurity, sensual appetites, unholy desires, and all greed and covetousness, for that is idolatry (the deifying of self and other created things instead of God). (Colossians.3.5 AMP)
The flesh serves it's own interests other than God's purpose. For this reason, when you decide to give it authority, you commit idolatry.
The Bible is so clear here, put to death the evil desire in our members. The route of sin can be traced up to the evil desire to gratify self by Eve. The promise of knowledge and a rank like God caused Eve to disobey God's command.
It's not only about being pure, the putting to death of the evil desire goes far deeper. The decay in the world today is because animal desire was unlocked in the spirit of man. One of the lost books –The book of Adam and Eve, says Adam kept himself out of the cave, praying to God that the animal desire burning in him should be quenched.
Today we are faced with children getting married, these marriages are not with purpose, they are all aimed at gratification of human lust. Marriage as set by God is of purpose. Today marriages are contracts. Why? Lack of purpose.
People kill themselves, all because of unholy desires. It's no just to purify ourselves that scripture is telling us to put these to death, but that the nature of God in our spirit is made manifest.
So I say, live by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the sinful nature. For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that you do not do what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under law. (Galatians.5.16 - 18 )
