John.19.30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. (NKJV)
Nobody could take His life from Him. Nothing could stand in the way of His purpose. He had the power to lay it down and take it up.
Purpose had to be accomplished. And when He said, "It is finished," He meant something deeper than just the words. What was finished?
He didn't mean that He was now to rest from suffering. He didn't mean that He had escaped the persecution in the world. All those things were standing against his purpose. Yet He cared nothing about them.
His purpose was what He had to accomplish.
John.10.10 The thief's purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give life in all its fullness. (NLT)
In giving life, He had to deal with the death sentence which hoovered over every man. Death is a result of sin the Bible says. So in giving life, He had to blot out sin. That is what was finished.
All sin had been laid upon Him. The pain and suffering of man had been lifted onto Him. He bore what was meant for man. He bridged the gap between man and God. And when He was sure that life was set to be received by whoever believed in Him, He said "it is finished!"
His declaration meant that life was free to be received, pain was not our reward, death had no power, sin had lost dominion, life eternal is our inheritance and that we have free access to God the father.
Hallelujah!
