Matthew.8.10 When Jesus heard this, he was astonished and said to those following him, "I tell you the truth, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. (NIV)
Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. [Hebrews.11.1]. But when does faith really reach a point of being called great.
Having extreme assurance of something becoming because there is some evidence can not be called great faith. For example saying you have faith that you are going to buy a car after confirming that there is something in your account is actually not great faith.
In the Bible, we know that the promises and assurance of salvation was given to the children of Israel. By default, we expect them to believe in the Messiah who is Jesus Christ. More so His word and authority with which He came.
But the centurion in Capernaum was not an Israelite. For a man who was not given the promises, or had circumstantial evidence of His authority to believe in Him marveled Christ. He called it great faith.
Great faith is trusting God in times that there is even no evidence that He will work it out. It is a feeling and a knowing that you get when nobody can give a previous testimony.
It is choosing to trust God when nothing around you can give some light of possibility. When all people see a dead end, you choose to see a high way.
When all people in your familial lineage couldn't get it, you choose to see it happen. Many people believe God when they can find testimonies from people who once were in their circumstances.
But will you trust in God when nobody around you has been there yet?
The second time we hear of great faith from Jesus Christ is when a woman asked Him to heal her daughter. This woman however, in sight of people didn't deserve what she was asking for.
Matthew.15.28 Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour. (NIV)
When your accounts, your credentials, relations or connections don't point to anything great and anybody would call you unworthy but you choose to trust God, how great is such faith.
All in all, I would say; great faith is having persistency and boldness in approaching God, understanding God’s Authority, believing without seeing and acknowledging God's Goodness.
Hallelujah!
