Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews.12.1 NIV)
Before you start to think that the race is too tough, look back on what the pioneers went through to give birth to the faith that you have today. Chapter 11 of Hebrews sets us a few of the witnesses who were strengthened by the faith they had.
Today we are sorrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses who act as a point of reference. The witnesses we read about had no point of reference. But they knew that their perseverance would produce fruit.
Now we are told to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. Anything done without faith is sin. And accepting to go the way of the world gives us unnecessary weight that causes us to linger.
The witnesses we have desired to enter the heavenly home, and now we too have a race marked out for us to run. Like I said, to us is a point of reference: those counted righteous for their faith and Jesus Christ Himself.
To finish this race, we too have to have faith. He says we have not yet persisted and persevered to the point of shedding blood. Looking at nothing that can distract your progress in the race but Jesus Christ who is the author and finisher of your faith.
Hallelujah!
